According to reports by SportsNet's Elliotte Friedman, the Bruins, Penguins, Kings, and Ducks are discussing the possibility of playing all home games outdoors. He opened the article by calling this option a "longshot" but let's be optimistic and consider it a real option for the Bruins. The main venue in discussion for the Bruins is Fenway freaking Park. America's most beloved ballpark could be the home to the Boston Bruins for more than one game a season. With the season's tentative start date set at less than a month from now, it's absolutely mind-boggling that teams are still proposing new ideas on how to play this upcoming season.
Regardless of how unlikely this is to actually happen let's look back at some legendary moments on Landsdowne and dream about what could be if this miraculously becomes reality.
With the comeback of the old uniform design its seems like a perfect time to wear these reverse retro jerseys that were originally worn by Ray Bourque, Terry O'Reilly, Rick Middleton, and Cam Neely, a little more often and play all your home games in a stadium that Carl Yastrzemski, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, and Ted Williams called home as well.
One of the coolest parts of outdoor games in the NHL is how much tradition is mentioned and demonstrated during the origins of the games. Because of the heavy tradition in Boston as a city and outdoor games for hockey, you get to see many cool moments like Bruins great, Bobby Orr, and all-time Flyer Bobby Clarke drop the puck in the most legendary ballpark in America.
The pure excitement of outdoor games is enough for me. The opportunity to be the guy who scores the game-winning goal in Fenway Park might be the coolest addition to anyone's resumé.
Maintaining and keeping up with the ice surface may be a challenge but I think if it allows for some once in a lifetime moments AND fans get to see the Bruins play in person this season. I'm all for it, and any hockey fan should be too.
